Cannot choose AirPort Express for Mac system audio output

Music playback from iTunes to my Airport Express works fine.

On the same Mac, Airport Express is listed as an AirPlay device in System Preferences > Sound. When I choose it, I get a message saying "Could not connect to ...'s Airport Express".

What could be the problem?

MacBook Pro Mid 2010, Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.6, iTunes 12.6.3.6

Ok.. sure.. that is standard 7.8 firmware issue.

In the airport utility, click on your express icon.. and in the summary page, click on the firmware number 7.8 with the option key held down.. a long list of alternative firmware will show up.. choose the previous version 7.6.9 or 7.6.8 and it will downgrade back to a working firmware.

You should then have no issue with it in iTunes.

7.8 firmware is problematic for many people.

I am amazed that music playback is working but you cannot locate the Express in the network.

The round about method is to find the express's IP address.

You might get this from your main router.. if you have one. Look at the DHCP table.

Or you might get it from arp command in the computer.

The easiest method is to use a network tool like Fing on ipad or iPhone (there is a free version in the store).

It will check the network for all the different devices and list them. The IP of the Express should be there.

Open airport utility in your Mac (or use the iOS version which you can also download and is often more reliable).

In the top menu click File and Configure Other.. type in the Express IP address and password will get you in.
