No VO2 Max & HR on activity screen with external HR

Hi,

I have same problem, as described here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8336452

I have AW4, 44 mm. Is there any setting, how to show heart rate on activity screen (Outdoor Run)?

And why VO2 Max is not shown, when used external heart rate belt (in my case, Decathlon version)? When I use watch heart rate measuring, VO2 max is included in report, when used external monitor, then VO2 Max is missing.

Thank you

Hi Betacart,

We appreciate the follow-up. Your external device is tracking the VO2 Max metric, but you're not seeing it in the Health app; is that right? It sounds like you may need to add a data source; try tapping Health > Health Data > Activity > VO2 Max > Data Sources & Access. You may be able to enable access to this data here: Manage Health data on your iPhone, iPod touch, or Apple Watch.

Also worth noting is the "How Health handles data from multiple sources" section of the above link. Since you're using multiple data sources, you might need to check how they are prioritized. This may apply to your question regarding your external heart rate monitor as well as the VO2 Max data.

Kind regards.

Hi Betacart,

Thanks for the detailed reply! You are correct that VO2 is calculated on the iPhone end. The features supported would vary a bit depending on the specific external device you're using; for example, some may track one type of data and report it to the Health app, but it may not be able to track all types. Since this involves a few different usage scenarios, it may be best to get in touch with Apple directly to look into this further: Contact Apple Support.

Cheers!

Hello Betacart,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. If I understand your post correctly, you have a few questions about the Activity app.

You should be able to view your heart rate while working out as shown in the "Track your progress" section of this link: Work out with your Apple Watch. By raising your wrist and tapping the Digital Crown, you should be able to view any available metrics during your workout.

Regarding the VO2 Max metric, can you provide a little more detail about what's happening? Are you asking if you can add this metric to your progress view while working out, or something else?

I hope this helps get you started.

Cheers!

Hi,

thank you for your reply.

Yes, you understand correctly. How can I add VO2 Max, when I am using external heart rate belt? In case I use it, it is not shown in Health>VO2 Max. When I not use external heart rate belt, but using AW sensor, it is contained. So, why it is missing with external?

Also, how can I add external heart rate monitor data of heart rate in External Run activity?

Thank you

Jirka

Hi,

thank you for more detailed informations. Maybe I forget to mention important thing - I am using external heart rate belt ONLY with Apple Watch 4. It is paired and connected directly to watch, iPhone stay at home during workout. And when connected directly to watch, I am not able to select any data source or priority.

Measuring of heart rate is working well with the external belt, but data from it is not shown on activity screen of watches and VO2 Max are then not synced/displayed in Health app on iPhone after I return and sync with watch.

Thank you

Hi,

thank you for your reply. I followed all your advices and here is in detail, what I found:

  • Watch with enabled HR on watch, disabled Power Saving -> HR is shown in Activity screen; VO2 Max is present in Health
  • Watch with enabled HR on watch, disabled Power Saving and connected external HR -> HR is shown in Activity screen (but it looks like HR only from watch is shown); VO2 Max is present in Health (but it looks like it is data from Watch sensor)
  • Watch with disabled HR on watch, enabled Power Saving -> HR is not shown in Activity screen (but it is measuring and later, it is synced with iPhone correctly); VO2 Max entry missing completely
  • iPhone connected to external HR, Watch enabled HR on watch, disabled Power Saving -> HR is shown in Activity screen (but looks like HR only from watch is shown); VO2 Max is present in Health (but it looks like it is data from Watch sensor)

Even if I put external HR monitor as 1st in line in priority screen of HR data sources, it has no effect.

So, based on my experience, I would like to ask some questions:

1 - do external HR monitor need to support also VO2 Max? I thought, that it is calculated completely by iPhone/Watch

2 - can I see somewhere on iPhone all features supported by external HR? So far, I found only one entry in HR data source as "Heart rate" next to external HR monitor

So, my problem can be divided to 2 sections:

a) when using combination Watch only, disabled HR on watch, enabled Power Saving and paired and connected external HR monitor, it is not shown external monitor's HR data in Activity screen (see 1st image, where there is no HR data displayed and 2nd image confirming, that external HR monitor is connected via Bluetooth and working)

b) lack of presence of VO2 Max data when using external HR monitor completely

Thank you for your patience about this issue so far.

Hi,

thank you for reply. Of course, I have selected heart rate entry for outdoor run or outdoor walk, as I see it from HR directly from watch. But if I disable this HR sensor and use only external, I not see anything (refer to my picture above). I am suspecting external HR monitor, that it cannot send heart rate to watch (or something like that).

Anyway, HR is recorded and because of this, I not understand, why VO2 max is not calculated...
