telegram messenger on ipod touch

Telegram messenger is supposed to be usable on an ipod touch. When setting up the program, however, you can only continue the log in process by entering a telephone number, which, of course an ipod touch doesn't have. Does anyone know how this is supposed to work or have a work around?
