Mojave (DVDPlayer) no longer plays Video_TS files on local disk?

Anyone else ****** about this? In Mojave it seems that the DVDPlayer utility is being dropped or not updated to 64bit. It will still play a DVD from a Superdrive but not Video_TS files. Apple has done this without a replacement for the DVDPlayer. Yes, I know VLC will play them but I don't care for the interface. I just want something simple like the DVDPlayer.

Apple support says that this is expected functionality... which is to ignore your file selection without any message (error or otherwise) when selecting a file to play. Come on Apple - Really? Bad programming is expected functionality?

Am I the only one that wants to play Video_TS files? How can the only threads that come up on this be 12 years old?

What say you? Should Apple Update DVDPlayer for Mojave and beyond?

Yes, I know you stated that. And as I noted, you already have a solution.

Apple, and virtually every company out there seems to believe optical disks are already dead. Apple dropped DVD Studio Pro years ago and has never offered a replacement. Adobe dropped Encore all the way back at CS6. You can still download it through their CC subscription, but it hasn't received an update of any kind since CS6.

If you're going strictly by sales numbers, yes, optical disk sales (DVD and Blu-ray) are way down from 5 - 10 years ago. Despite being anything but dead, the major software developers seem to think it is and are doing little to nothing towards its continued support.

Unless you have a DVD player/burner/Superdrive, the CD/DVD option will no longer show. My MBP with a Superdrive has it in System Preferences, my MBA without a Superdrive does not. Apple gave up on media some time ago when they decided that everyone should only use a simplified iMovie app, put together quick iPhone movies/selfies and share them online. Trying to find an option to export with best/decent settings (HD, lossless, etc is not available in the latest iMovie versions) is impossible. That is why I maintain my older MBP which can boot into long forgotten OS versions in order to use an old iMovie HD, iDVD, etc., export it with advanced settings and burn it.

Very helpful... as stated previously VLC will play them.

Although you seemed to have ignored my point that Video_TS files aren't going away anytime soon, and Apple should have a way to play them without needing third parties. Apple prides (and markets) itself on its quality Video and Audio capabilities but no longer supports one of the most common video formats.

As a longtime Apple customer I expect better.

I'm somewhat confused. After downloading Mojave 10.14.2 I can no longer play/watch my new purchased DVD's or music CD's.

The external superdrive and film title come up on my desk top but will not play. After looking on the forum I found and moved the DVD player to the applications fold and placed it in the dock. Still no joy. I then took further advice and download the VLC software. Even that will not play my films. It will open the video- TS files off the DVD but will not play instead I get messages on screen saying can't complete because film is copyright protected. Either, after having mac's for twenty odd years they are getting beyond my knowledge and ability or, my late 2015 iMac is now incapable of playing DVD's/CD's. I'd be most grateful of any advice, good or bad.

Tuggerose, haven't had any issues playing from a physical DVD player so I can't speak to that issue directly. I have at times had problems playing a converted file on the local drive or NAS. In almost all cases it was result of a bad conversion. I would try a different conversion program to see if you have the same results. I'm also on 10.14.2 so don't see that as the problem other than what I stated initially. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Again thank you for your guidance. Yes I had the correct box's ticked in 'Finder Preferences' but I don't have anything in the System Preferences under CDs & DVD's since installing Mojave which seems rather odd. Tomorrow I'll get my laptop out and see if it is in the System Preference fold on that which is running High Sierra. I'm off to bed now. Again thank you so much for your time and support.

Thank you for your reply. It seems like there is a box somewhere that needs to be ticked. With regards to CD's, when I place a music CD in my external optical superdrive nothing shows on the desktop. I've opened iTunes and still my music CD doesn't show up anywhere or play. I also have a mac pro laptop which is still running OS High Sierra and, have no problem playing or watching films and CD's on that using the same external superdrive. The DVD player on the iMac is updated to 64 bit unlike the on on the laptop which is still 32 bit. I've even carried out a reload of Mojave incase something didn't install correctly. Everything else works great, no problems with anything other than playing films and DVD's. I nearly forgot, I've tried putting in a blank CD and it just tells me it isn't formatted and my computer can't read or format it. I've used loads of blank CD's on the iMac before the upgrade to store data without any problems. Again, many thanks any thoughts you might have will be gratefully received.
