Lost contacts

He has clearly mentioned contacts appear when the phone number is entered. This is a clear case of Phone numbers being hidden accidentally.

Contacts App > Groups > Show All Contacts will do the trick

I guess it might depend on whether the contacts on your iPhone 4 were stored on the device or with an iCloud account.

If stored locally, then although I have not seen it before the lack of space has lead to the contacts being deleted for some reason.

If you had your contacts stored in an iCloud account then you would simply log back in to it on the device and the contacts would come back down from the cloud (iCloud).

Is it possible that you may have iOS backups on your computer in iTunes. (These backups happen when you sync your phone by cable with a Mac). You could restore one of these backups to your new replacement phone.

If you have lost your contacts sadly you might need to re-enter them. If you do I would recommend that you sign up for an iCloud account and store your phone numbers that way. Then the phone numbers have a master copy stored in the cloud and you can then download/sync them anytime and access them online too.

Once you have set up an iCloud account (free) you might also find it helpful to go to settings on your phone...

> Settings > Scroll down to Contacts > Set the Default account to be iCloud.

In this way, any new contacts are sure to be saved to iCloud and not to your device.

Where did you store your Contact Details?

Have you merged your Contacts to iCloud or any other web-based email service providers, like, gmail, hotmail, outlook, yahoo etc...

If you have accidentally selected Hide All your Contacts in Contacts App. The Contacts will not be displayed but will exists and will appear when you type the phone number

Open Contacts App > Select Group (Top Left Hand Side) > Select Show All Contacts.

Ah Very good. Did not think of that one. I was assuming contacts just on phone.
