I understand you want to check if your contacts and photos are being saved to iCloud. I'd be happy to show you how to check.
On your iPhone, go to Settings > ["Your Name"] > iCloud > Photos. Is the option for iCloud Photos enabled? If it is, your photos should be in iCloud.
You can confirm this by visiting iCloud.com from a computer.
To check that contacts are being stored in iCloud, go to Settings > Contacts and check the default account. If iCloud is set to the default, your contacts should be saved in iCloud. You can confirm by going to the Contacts app, tapping groups at the top-left side. Uncheck all accounts, except iCloud and press done. Here, you can see which contacts are stored in iCloud.
If you find your contacts are not being stored in iCloud, check your other email accounts, since they may be saving there. You will have to export your contacts and then import to iCloud using these steps: iCloud: Import a contact into iCloud Contacts
