Issue with erasing with new Apple Pencil

I have a 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 with the new Apple Pencil. The pencil works great with pretty much everything but erasing. With my last Apple Pencil, I was able to erase part of a drawing/word/etc instead of the whole thing. I have tried with notability as well as the iPad notes app, and it does the same thing on both. I have hard reset my iPad, unpaired and repaired the Apple Pencil and it does the same thing.

Any idea what I doing wrong?

I have same problem as Stephen0715, yesterday I sketched and could erase small (circular) parts. today I started a new sketch and can only erase entire lines . touch the line and it all disappears. however I can return to yesterdays drawing where the eraser behaves in the other way. there must be a setting I accidentally changed.. I cant open a new note and use the eraser in the original (my preferred) manner where there is a circular patch erased. ( the size of the circle is dependent on the angle of the pencil )
