iPhone XS IP68 rating

I had my phone in water under 2 meters for under 30 minutes which is what the phone is suppose to handle according to its IP68 rating. My phone will not turn on. I took it to an Apple store and they informed me that there's water damage and I would have to pay over $500 to repair/replace it. I explained the circumstances and they just continued to say that's the only way. If a device has a rating then it should be able to perform up to that standard. I feel that they should had repaired or replaced my phone at no cost. Is there a way I can do this?

The iPhone is water resistant. NOT waterproof. You should NEVER intentionally get it wet or immerse it in water.

You are confusing testing methodology with real work use.

Liquid damage is explicitly not covered by the warranty, just like liquid damage is explicitly not covered by the warranty of any of the android phones out there that advertise water resistance.

You will have to pay for an out of warranty replacement.

I appreciate your response. I understand the difference between water proof and resistant. I did not intentionally get my phone wet either. That is why I am confused that my phone didn't work. The rating says basically 1 meter for 30 minutes and apple has said 2 meters for 30 minutes in a lab. My phone was maybe 1 minute in 1 meter depth of a pill. After I the phone it worked for a couple minutes then wouldn't turn on. What's the point of advertising the capability of the device is not guaranteed to work up to that standard. That's what doesn't matter sense.
