Why does photo transfer my photos from tiff to jpeg? I am scanning pictures into photos. The info shows that they are being saved in tiff format. When I drag them into an external hard drive, they change to jpeg.

I'm scanning pictures into photos. The info shows that while in photos they are tiff format. When I drag them into an external hard drive, the change to jpeg. Why is this?

Because drag and drop from the Photos interface copies the preview - or however Photos wants to do it. To get more control, select the image and use File->Export...

You can export the unmodified Tiff, or choose to change the size or filetype.

If you select IPTC as XMP, Photos will export a second file, that contains any metadata you added in Photos, for example the keywords, location, title, description you added.

The command "File > Export > Export unmodified original" will export the original exactly as you imported it. A TIFF will be exported as a TIFF, a RAW file as the original RAW file. Without the additional XPM sidecar file the metadata you added in Photos would be lost. If you keep the XPM sidecar file in the same folder as the exported image, Photos can apply the saved metadata when you import the photo again back to Photos.
