Yes, you need to be sure to click far left. The only other solution is to disable secondary click in System Preferences. You can use Control-click when you need contextual menus.

Mouse was the real offender and turning off secondary click seems to have fixed it.

Was it an Apple Mouse BTW?
My mouse loves to open drop down menus but aggressively so. I have to click a point very accurately to avoid getting drop down menu options
