The topic says it all. I'm hoping that someone has a work around. If Apple engineers truly put this limit on their computers/ monitors, I can only guess that they are actually trying to go out of business.
The iMacs that do not support Target Display Mode simply do not have
the hardware designed to operate in that manner. There is no magic
workaround, period. It is like expecting a car built with two wheel drive
to magically be capable of running as a four wheel drive vehicle, the
hardware is simply not there to do it.
Because those were the one's built to support Target Display Mode. And knowing why or how won't help change anything.
Thank you Smokerz. I had found that information. My question is more technical. Why is it that only those iMac's can be used as displays. Once we know why, we can then ask the question of how do we use other iMacs as displays. There has to be a work around on this.

Why is it that only certain iMac models can be used as a display...? That sounds pretty dumb to me. I have a 2017 iMac Retina display 27" that I'm trying to use as a second display to my 2013 iMac 27"
