Tunein for Apple Watch

Is it just me or did TuneIn make an update this January which removes the capability to run the app on just the Apple Watch without having the iPhone to hand? I’ve got Apple Watch 3 and have a data plan for it. I walk to work and back every day, about an hour overall per day and was using TuneIn all the time. I’d start it from the Watch, select my station and off I would go with my Bluetooth headset. I’m almost positive I even turned off data on my phone to save battery one time on the way home so I just assumed it worked using the data on the Watch and didn’t need the phone.

Did anyone else have that? Has it changed for you?

Yes that’s correct only tunein doesn’t stream, or Spotify. The only one that streams currently via Apple Watch cellular is Apple Music and its Radio stations. Ta

I not sure it ever ran a stand alone app. As this requires streaming. Only one to stream directly to Bluetooth headphones is Apple Music which included Apple Music. You can take your phone with you to steam through that with Bluetooth headphones and use the watch to control the stations. Personally I would love this to work and also Spotify to stream for from the Watch with cellular data. Ta

Thanks for you response.

You can switch data on/off on the Watch by swiping up on the Watch face and top row you have the data and WiFi icons. Tap the data icon and you can toggle data on/off.

Otherwise you can also go to (on the Watch) Settings, Mobile Data and it shows you the status if you have a data plan that works on the Watch.

No, if you have a cellular connection and no restrictions, and your iPhone is not with you, you should be able to stream using cellular with the Watch unless either the Tunein app restricts this or, possibly, if the ability to stream Tunein via cellular has been disable on the iPhone which could be transferred to the Watch thereby prevention streaming. I don't have the app so I cannot test it.

Make sure that on your iPhone you are allowing it to use cell data.

As I understand it is you phone using cellular data when playing tunein radio. The connection to the Watch is done by Bluetooth. So switching off cellular data on the watch would make no difference. Ta

Sorry not sure you’ve read this fully - I’m trying to get the app to work standalone on the Watch. Can you explain in more detail please - are you saying the phone needs to be using cell data? Or the watch?

Yes I am aware of that but only on the iPhone can you set your preferences for individual applications using cellular, i.e. you can go to Tunein and turn off the ability for that app to use cellular data.

No, I did. I'm just guessing if you have an app on your iPhone set to not use cellular data it may pass that condition on to the Watch as there is no such setting I know of on the Watch.
