Continually getting error 4005 - Phone won't Restore or Update! Help

My iPhone 6 simply went dead. I did a restart, then a hard restart and nothing, then I tried to sync the phone and that's when 4005 came up but when I tried both and nothing. Message says itunes is updating the software on this phone. Then 4005 comes back up and all stops.

It continually does the same thing over and over.

Please help.

Thanks Bob

The 4005 error is a non specific error with many potential causes. Some things to consider:

Is iTunes up to date? (Update if not)

Could there be corrupt files with it's installation? (Reinstall iTunes or try on another computer)

Is your PC's security software or firewall interfering with the process? (Temporarily reconfigure or turn off said security software)

Do I just have really bad luck? (Pick up a penny and hope it helps)

At some point you've exhausted your troubleshooting options and an appointment at a genius bar may be the only way to move forward with the device, if it's possible at all.

  1. Install the latest version of iTunes.
  2. Force your device to restart:
    • On an iPad Pro 11-inch or iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation): Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then, press and hold the Top button until you see the Apple logo.
    • On an iPhone 8 or later: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.
    • On an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus, press and hold both the Side and Volume Down buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
    • On iPhone 6s and earlier, iPad, or iPod touch, press and hold both the Home and Top (or Side) buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

3 . Connect your device to your computer using a USB cable.

4 .When iTunes asks you to update or restore, click Update (not Restore) to reinstall iOS and keep your personal data.
