Motion 5 crash when using Numbers Generator
When the Number Generator gets to its endpoint, Motion 5.4.2 crashes. Every time.
I'm not sure how to work around this. Any suggestions? I'm running macOS 10.4.1.
Thanks.

To avoid the crash, you can use a ramp behavior instead.
In the numbers generator, turn off 'animate'
Add a Ramp behavior to the value
then set you start and end values.
I don't get the crash when this is done.
Hope this helps.

Is just a basic count timer you want to make? Counting up to 8 or down from 8 etc ? If that is your goal, and you don't need the font to be editable, you can make a count-down animation by using an image sequence run through a replicator instead. I'm not sure how complex your project is with the 'count' animation, but the image sequence with replicator might work for you to produce the same visual animation you have in mind.
An alternative solution, with 'animate' kept on, is to add the end value to a slider widget - then set your slider to suit. This method also eliminates the crash.
Have you tried driving the start and end value of the generator with a ramp behaviour instead of direct input? Do you get the same crash under that condition?
I can't reproduce this problem. Motion shouldn't be crashing with basic Numbers operations. There's probably something else going on. [And, I assume you meant OS 10.14.1 ;)]
Are you using the automatic animation with a start and end number? If so, what's the range?
Are you trying to link the Value (animation turned off) to some other behavior or value?
What font are you using? Is it a "special" (overly "fancy") font? Third party? or supplied with the Mac, or Motion? Are you using 3D Text?
Are you using the Numbers generator with Align To in the mix?
I have this problem. It repeats on both my iMac and my MacBook Air. Running Motion 5.4.2 and MacOS 10.13.6.
What I'm trying to do seems very simple, and I think it's a Motion bug (though I haven't tried other fonts yet).
I'm using the Numbers Generator to count from 1 to 8. When I adjust the endpoint (out point) of the generator, it crashes.
Strangely, even though I've saved previous adjustments to the document, it reverts to an older version of the file. Separate issue, perhaps.
But for me, on 2 different machines, the Numbers Generator is right now unusable.
Tried a few fixes...a different localization (still English, but Europe this time). Tried 60fps, as I read in another thread it might help. The Numbers Generator just seems to cause crashes.
If anyone knows how to use the Numbers Generator safely (without huge workarounds) please fill me in. Thanks.
Replying just to say I am running in to this trouble also. Found a thread on fcp .com from 2015 that seems to be thalami problem: http://www.fcp.co/forum/6-motion-5/23624-very-big-bug-in-motion5-2 but it has no solution, only suggests the problem dates back even further. :(
Thanks this is working for me to!
Yes, 10.14.1. :) And now, 10.14.3, because I upgraded last night. My machine was clean-installed one month ago and has very little cruft on it.
I've tried using multiple ranges, and it doesn't make a difference: it always crashes when it gets to the end. And I've tried multiple fonts, including Georgia (which is included with the system) and that doesn't improve things either.
I'm not using 3D text. And I'm not quite sure what you are referring to by "Align To", but I don't think I'm doing that.
Hi, there are 2 solutions.
1: Turn off the 'animate' function and use ramp behavior instead to set the start and end values.
2: Keep 'animate' function on, but add the end value to a slider and set your values there.
These both eliminate the crash for me.
Hope this helps.
Do you use Adobe Typekit (or Adobe Fonts CC I think it is now)?
If the answer is no, I still think it's not really a Motion issue, but a font issue.
