Does the Apple Pencil 2 charge simultaneously while iPad 12.9 (3rd generation) is charging?

I just need a straight forward answer to this question. I have tested this for several nights. I attach my pencil to my ipad and verify that it is charging. I then plug my iPad in and verify that it is charging and that they both show the lightning bolt next to them that verifies that they are both charging in the battery widget. I go to sleep thinking that both will be 100% charged in the morning. Without fail, the iPad is 100% charged, but the Apple Pencil is only a few percentages higher than when I put it on initially. After unplugging the iPad charger the Apple Pencil charges to 100%.

What is happening?

yes, both should charging when connect to power.

What iOS are you using? Have you update to iOS 12.1.3 yet? Try it.

If you already have update, when you see the % hasn't gone up, restart iPad by holding top and volume side button until you see slider to turn off. Let it restart. It might charge up after you do that. It seems that it gets "stuck" at certain %.

This happened to me a few times with iOS 12.1.1 and that is what worked then. Seems to be working with iOS 12.1.3 for me

If not working properly I suggest you contact Apple Support using link here

Sometimes for me, when Apple Pencil gets charge to higher percentage ( 70%, -96%) it will seem to stop.

Most times, if I wait a few minute, charging eventually does resume.

The few times that it got "stuck", I simply restarted iPad and Pencil then started to charge, albeit slow.

I called Apple Support about it, was told Pencil charges "slower" when it get to the higher %.

Something else that I noted and told them of:

If I left Apple Pencil attach to iPad Pro overnight with BT (Blue tooth) on, pencil would be at 0% in morning and iPad would have lost significant charge of up to 20%.

This occurred three nights in a row- with the pencil already close to 100%- to be drained completely to 0% while attached to BT.

For now, I make sure my pencil has at least the 50-80% charge before not using for the night, then turn off the BT.

When I check each morning, both Apple Pencil and iPad have only lost 1% of battery. I made Apple aware of this in my case and they told me that is how I should continue to do it.

In the morning, I also burn back the BT and pencil begins to charge.

Do you leave the pencil charging constantly to the iPad?

Here is link to similar (identical)case - (including screenshot of actual case+ name ) because link is no longer. This new link is the same seller, the address listed is identical. Also photos used are exact used when I purchased through a link that no longer works)

This case supports Apple Pencil 2 but has the thin TPU in that slot where pencil goes so is similar with yours- which is most likely problematic for charging. I am just realizing this now.

BTW I appreciate your clear and concize explanation for what should be on the minds of designers of these cases.

My iOS was not updated, so I tried your suggestion. Unfortunately, I’m still having the same problem. I tried today with the iPad at 5% and the pencil around 57%. When I came back the iPad was 100% and the pencil only about 70% and no longer charging. I removed and remagnetized it and it began charging again. Something is causing it to stop charging.

Good Day,

Thank you for the information. I do not leave my pencil charging constantly. I am a medical student, so I use it throughout the day to study and take notes. I have a case that has a storage spot for the pencil. My goal each day is to only need to charge both the iPad and pencil while I am sleeping.

I am having the same issue where it appears the pencil stops charging around 70%. If I dis-and-reconnect it in the morning it finishes charging, which is inconvenient because I am ready to start my busy day.

For such expensive technology, that is an insufficient response from the person you spoke with at Apple. If I am charging them they should charge. I should not need to remember obscure charging rules, which are not in Apple's marketing information. They only promote that the iPad and Pencil charge simultaneously, not that one will charge and the other will charge partially unless you stand upside down and squint one eye. How ridiculous!

Well, I was hoping there was something I was doing wrong such that there might be an easy fix. I guess I will stop wasting my time and go back to being a humble indentured Apple servant.

I see. In my case, I to typically power my iPad off when I sleep and it's not in need of charging. When I get home from work, and power it up, my Pencil has NOT lost any charge. I don't know if the pencil continues to charge when the iPad is powered off (not just asleep), but I see no loss in charge in my Apple Pencil which is pretty much always attached to the iPad when not being used.

Amazing. You are charging with BT on and is fine.

Yet Apple Support but was not helpful in actually giving me the answer for what is happening. One said is normal. I can not see how connect to power, BT on overnight and pencil that is at 100% then drops overnight to 0%.

I would agree that it should not drain when plugged into power. I will bring to Apple Store and have looked at, because it seems there are different issues for different users who have Apple Pencil 2 and not enough information - I've searched all the battery info on Apple website- but nothing truly explanatory of the issue0. Thanks for your input. I appreciate.

Here is a link to the Keyboard case I own and you can also read my review about why it's a great case:

https://www.amazon.com/Yocktec-Keyboard-Ultra-Slim-Aluminum-Wireless/dp/B07N5R2G4X/ref=cm_cr_srp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

BTW, I checked the case you purchased. It is absolutely the WRONG case if you own Apple Pencil 2 as it simply will not permit charging of the pencil at all, unless the iPad is as you've now learned, removed from the case.

There are many options on Amazon, which specifically permit Apple Pencil charging and many aren't expensive at all. I personally want a Keyboard Case.

Thank you. As I suspected there is a cutout for your pencil to charge. Unfortunately, I do not need a keyboard case.

Thanks for looking at the case I purchased. It does allow some charging, but creates the problem I have been experiencing where it stops. If you noticed, it is marketed as being able to allow charging.

I'll look into the cases without keyboards that manufacturer of your case makes. Thank you!

You'll find many. Here's one I also own for times I don't need to carry my iPad with a Keyboard:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07KLLDKB9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1,

It's very nicely made and provides good protection for iPad. Personally, I'm not a fan folio style cases. They just don't provide much protection in case of a fall, but that of course is my personal preference and your preference be completely different.

Jan 31, 2019 11:07 AM in response to lobsterghost1

@ rbrylawski I like this folio case you link to. I have question- (amazon page is not allowing me to view the side photos)

Will assume that this has not any TPU where pencil goes to- right?

I'm convinced TPU is causing the problem for me with Apple Pencil. When I ordered case, it was one of few available in November with Apple Pencil "Support". It worked great until recent with sometimes having the issue of Apple Pencil draining to 0% at night when connect to power with BT on to charge iPad Pro.
