Time Machine verification wants to erase current backup make new backup time Capsule only 2 months old!

After updating to latest Mac OS X system I noticed a time machine error message telling me no choice but to erase time Capsule disc and create new backup(Told to do this by Apple “senior support”) put on hold 3 times and they wouldn’t listen to me telling them I don’t want to have to erase disc, create new backup.....especially when the heap of cheap junk is only 2 months old!

Tech Senior support person says.....”oh that should fix it”.....I don’t beleive him and he didn’t listen to me tell him I want the unit replaced with new time Capsule as error messages like these are the start of the exact same more to come!

I should have consumer rights/statutory warranty and should of been listened to instead of this fobbing me off bad practices by Apple tech support.

I purchase this time capsule only mid November 2018 and it is only just gone mid january 2019.....so I have only owned this unit for 2 months and already I’m getting the BS from Apple tech support as far as my rights are concerned......they are just being evasive and violating my warranty/statutory rights.

This is wrong on so many levels

Actually the issue is Mac OS.. not the Time Capsule.

Time Machine is now renowned for breaking its own backup..

See https://www.macworld.com/article/3170844/macs/when-backups-go-bad-the-problem-with-using-network-drives-with-time-machine.html

If you are new to using Time Machine.. get used to the regular.. TM has shat in its own nest and needs to wipe rinse and reshampoo.

Any.. and I mean ALL network targets will fail at some point with Time Machine.

I now use Carbon Copy Cloner as my "reliable backup" .. with Time Machine run as experiment to see how often it breaks itself on various targets.. I average about 8 weeks for example to an Asus router with USB drive which supposedly supports Time Machine.. but at least some of the blame is TM.

Although I'm not sure if PowerNap allows a backup or not. And if you close the lid before it finishes backup up fully, it could fail at that point.

It does.. and Apple have recommended people turn off power nap .. which is kind of silly but unfortunately Time Machine lacks controls. Certainly power nap is an issue but that is only for laptops.. although I guess in a way that is the most important because backing up over network does make sense.. with a desktop a local drive plugged in is a no brainer.

Let me also say not all 3rd party network targets are inherently unreliable.. several of us here use Synology NAS which work very well.

Using a reliable backup software like Carbon Copy Cloner allows me to do disinterested testing of Time Machine failures. A failure is merely recorded as test result rather than being a loss of history.

I have found TM machine backups to be quite reliable. I do get that message from time to time. In fact I recently had a MacBook Pro crash and used a Time Capsule to restore it. I did use an ethernet connection rather than wireless because wireless would have taken forever. Moving forward, I think the best way is to use a USB connected drive to a Mac on the network. Using third party routers, like LaPastenague said may only last 8 months until failing. If its a laptop, probably what is happening is typically Time Machine defaults itself not to back up on battery power. So backup are only going to happen when it's plugged in and charging - not sleeping. Although I'm not sure if PowerNap allows a backup or not. And if you close the lid before it finishes backup up fully, it could fail at that point.

Hi,

I have my time capsule set up in bridge mode(Ethernet cable to thunderbolt gigabit adapter plugged into MacBook)....from LAN port on TC and Ethernet cable from TC to my Modem/router.

I use an app called anti sleep and have settings enabled such as....

Keep external discs from sleeping

Display set to 10 min timeout

Keep awake when close lid(but I never close MacBook lid if system is awake all the time as I want MacBook to be able to breathe through back vents)

I also use mountain app so I can manually safely unmount data disc(TC) before I then go on to use finder to safely disconnect/connect TC disc>input airport network password.

What is the deal with MacOSX automatic/manual software supplementary updates and Time capsule eg:Restart/Installation?

Could the restart and installation of OSX updates cause the Time capsule to “not unmount/disconnect safely thereby corrupting the TC disc as this recent issue with TC needing to erase current/create new backup and only after 2 months of use is ridiculous.

My TC is the latest model and has fan vents built into base of unit unlike prior models so I shouldn’t have to be concerned that due to any potential overheating going on then that is to blame because it’s not.

The unit also feels very mild/lukewarm to the touch.

I use belkin power board specifically built to shield routers, modems laptops from spikes,surges....etc with 2yr $’s paid out should my components get affected by such.

So my power supply to my time capsule should not be compromised and if any proposed power supply company needs to carry out neighboring maintenance work then they let us know in advance so I can timely unmount, disconnect log out, shutdown and switch off at powerboard then mains, unplug everything.

Thanks

Jon
