The remember playback position for audiobooks in iTunes is now greyed out in Mojave

I can no longer get this feature to work in the Options tab in iTunes, which is obviously a problem with audiobooks. The helpline at Audible.com tells me that the feature was removed with Mojave. Is that true? If so, why?!

It was removed earlier than that. In principle iTunes should always remember the playback position for audiobooks, so they have disabled access to a feature you're not supposed to tinker with. If iTunes isn't remembering the position for you temporarily change the media kind to Music, set the Remember playback position flag, then change the media kind back to Audiobook.
