changed my AppleID password, and now I have a red notification circle on my system prefs icon in the dock on my iMac that won't go away no matter what I do. When I open system prefs the red dot shows on notifications, but nothing I do in there changes it. I ***hate*** having red dots!!

go to system preferences—> iCloud—> account details. Are you prompted for Apple ID password? Since you changed it, it might needs to be updated

Nope. Now when I open system prefs, it says I have a notification for iCloud as well. I've *NEVER* been able to figure out how iCloud actually works. Neither, I might add, have most Apple customer service people.
And what does the iCloud notification say?
Check System Preferences > Software Update.
F_Rappe is probably correct. I didn't notice you said you changed your Apple ID password. You will have to update it if you haven't already.
