Retina display is black; safe boot temporarily fixes problem

On my Macbook Pro 13", mid 2014, running OS 10.10.5, my retina display is black.

I think it's a software issue, since I've been able to boot in safe mode and the screen will light up. After restarting back in normal boot mode, everything is fixed! But after some amount of minutes, the retina display will black out again.

I'm able to use an external monitor.

What could be causing this and what are some fixes?

Update: The screen is now black again (even after coming back before!). I have also tried updating the OS to Mojave, and further re-installing the OS. I also ran Apple Diagnostics (booting with D held), which identified no problems.

You can Try resetting NVRAM/PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379

if no luck

The problem is fixed! I ran Disk Utility, which identified a problem with the hard drive when I clicked "Verify Disk". I then booted in Recovery Mode, went to Disk Utility there, and clicked "Verify Disk". It worked for a while but then said there were no problems with the disk. I then rebooted (and did *not* click "Repair Disk"), and the problem is fixed! I'll update this post if the problem recurs.
