Apple Warranty vs Verizon Warranty

We bought an iPhone 7 for my son a little over a year ago from Verizon and we also got on their protection plan. I think it's $13 a month. We've had the phone over a year so I know it's out of the Apple warranty. He's had the phone for less than two years so the phone isn't even paid off through Verizon yet. The sides have already started pulling away, leaving a big gap. It looks as if the battery may have swollen inside the phone. To replace the phone through Verizon it will cost $149 (deductible). My question is will Apple replace it since it's less than two years old? It seems like a phone that cost almost $800 should last more than two years. My husband has already had to replace his phone also. Is it me or has the quality of Apple products really gone down. What are my options here?

Unless you got AppleCare, Apple is not obligated to replace it for free. The out-of-warranty replacement cost for an iPhone 7 is $319.

I would still, however, suggest that you make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store and have them evaluate it. Apple has been known to replace phones for the price of the battery replacement if a swollen battery was the problem. I would look into that before making a claim at Verizon. One, it might be cheaper and two, you would be getting a phone that was refurbished by Apple. If you go through Verizon, you're getting a phone that was refurbished by a company called CTDI (unless it has changed since I stopped working for Verizon). They are perfectly capable folks but, I'd rather have a phone refurbished by the company that made it in the first place.
