Why do lightning cables break so easily?
I wonder how Apple can make such a fragile cable.

It doesn't seem that they do.
If your someone who has trouble with cables, disassemble a retractable ball point pen. Take the spring and wrap it around the cable near where it enters the connector at the lightning end. It's a bit fidgety to wrap the spring. However, it will prevent you from kinking the cable and breaking the wires.
I've never broken one heck I my 30pin cable that came with my ipod touch 1g from 2008 still works
my trick is that when I disconnect my cable on don't pull the cable I pull the connector, both in theh usb end and in the lighting bolt end
(I do the same with other types of cables too)
My late father taught me decades ago never to pull anything out by the cord. Always by grasping the plug.
They don't break easily when not mistreated.
I too have never had one fail nor break. And i have a dozen or so since I keep ones in my car, in my briefcase, at my office, plugged into several outlets in my home so I can charge devices in the bedroom, living room, den, etc without having to move a power supply around.
Seems to me as long as you take care of them, they last many, many years of regular use.
