iMessage Freezes every time I open

I just bought a brand new macbook pro 15 inch and every time I receive a message on iMessage and open it, iMessage will freeze for about five seconds before responding. I would not expect this behavior on a new computer. Is there something that could be going wrong or something I can try to reset? I haven't found anything specifically relevant to my issue on google.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I've managed to fix this after digging in. The freeze up was from an unsent SMS message that was stuck in a weird state. When in iMessage, I opened Preferences which immediately pointed out the unsent message and asked if I wanted to ignore or resend. I ended up deleting the entire conversation to remove the message, but you could have resent it likely as well to get it out of the limbo state. Once this was done, iMessage did not freeze up after opening.

You haven't provided very much information or what you have tried, so far, to resolve this yourself.

I assumed that you attempted to run a YouTube link in a iMessage from the Messages app and it froze. At least, that's what I got out of your original post. Is this not the case?

I was asking if you go to the YouTube site with a web browser, do you have any issues with videos freezing when you do?

To clarify, the youtube video is a screen recording of me opening iMessage on my Macbook and clicking a message thread at time 0:05 in the video. Nothing happens until 0:12 when my Macbook finally responds to my click. The video is purely to demonstrate the lagg I experience.

I have observed the following:

  • When I open iMessage for the first time like this, it exhibits this behavior. After that, as long as I keep the app open, it responds quickly.
  • When I click a notification for an incoming message and it opens the iMessage app, it exhibits the slow behavior.
  • When iMessage is lagging, my computer will also not respond to clicks outside of the iMessage window until it is done loading.

I have tried the following for troubleshooting:

  • Restart computer
  • Repair permissions
  • Reset VRAM
  • Log in and out of iMessage with a restart.

Ok, thank you for the additional details. By "iMessage" I assume you are referring to the Messages app on your new notebook ... correct? The only other question I have is does this "freeze" happen when you just open the Messages app without trying to do a screen recording?

Regardless, please give me a moment and I'm going to perform a data capture on my Mac to see what the Messages app does when it it first started up, hopefully to gets some clues to why yours is having the lag when you first run it. I'll get back to you in a bit.

I have the exact same issue and I'm on a Mac mini (2018) . It also happens if I open Excel and open a new blank book - everything freezes for a few seconds and then it loads.

I contacted Apple about it and brought it to the Apple store. The genius saw it and recommended a replacement. Got my new replacement today and the issue persists. I also started from scratch and manually copied my files without using Time Machine restore.

Any ideas for those with a Mac Mini and no option to uncheck "automatic graphics switching"?

I don't have any unsent messages on mine - this is not a fix. I also noticed the same freeze occurs when I start Microsoft Excel (ver 16.23) and open a blank workbook - same exact freeze occurs, so it's a wider system issue.

I've also encountered a complete system freeze where I can't move the mouse or type anything on the keyboard for up to 20 seconds and then everything responds again.

Those issues are on my brand new Mac Mini. I already returned one and got a replacement, tried a new clean Mojave install without restoring from Time Machine and the issue persists.
