Final Cut slow down

Aaaargggh! Apple what have you done to Final Cut? Since the last update (s) it has ground to halt. I have tried all the things suggested previously but nothing seems to get it back to the speed I am used to.

IMac Retina 5K late 2014

macOS Mojave 10.14.2

Processor 3.5 GHz intel Core i5

8 GB MHz DDR3

AMD Radeon R9 M290X 2048 MB Graphics card

Final Cut Pro 10.4.5

Reinstalled, using transcoding media - shut everything else down on the Mac..... etc Nothing works.

Hi, I had the same issue! FCPX working fine, installed Mac OS update (10.14.3), opened up FCPX an hour later, and it was running unbearably slow. and I mean unusable slow, any action has a horrible lag. A single click takes forever to react. Theres just no way you can edit like that.

Long story short, here's what helped me. Turn off Background Rendering.

Go to Preferences in the Final Cut Menu Bar. Or if thats too slow hit, Cmd comma ( ⌘ ,)

Under Playback settings, uncheck Background Render.

That made all the difference in my situation and now FCPX is actually usable. If your playback is slow, you can render manually. Go to Modify in menu bar, and at the bottom choose Render All or Render Selection.

I'm not sure what happened w the update. Background rendering was quick and barely noticeable. But then background render was moving at a ridiculous pace. It was always trying to render and was never able to past 0%.

I saw this post when I was searching for a solution. this is what fixed it for me, I hope this helps!

Please post the rest of the report. Use the

button below the text entry area.

Anyway, from just the start of the report we can see two things:

1) adware. Remove it. You can run Etrecheck again and follow the instructions for removal.

2) more than one antivirus application. The correct number is zero. Antivirus on the mac do nothing to help and a lot to hinder performance. Having two of them, they interfere with each other as well as the system.

Luis.

Removed trusteer and quit Keis - no change.

Further detective work reveals that older media moved to my Thunderbolt drive works just fine.

The recently imported media that grinds FCP to a halt, has the same problem on a USB drive as on my Thunderbolt drive.

The new media was imported via an HDMI/Thunderbolt interface from a video camera and I am now wondering if it is the Thunderbolt interface that has been upset by the latest update of the OS

I have imported some 4k video media from a second camera (taken at the same time as the HD media) via a USB port and FCP works just fine. So the problem would appear to have been narrowed down to media imported via an HDMI/Thunderbolt cable!

Etrecheck is a diagnostic utility created by a respected member of this community to help users around here help each other.

It produces a report that lets us know the hardware details, os version and software you have installed that modifies the system.

It is used daily in these forums many times, and is the best way someone, like me, who is not looking over your shoulder, have an idea of what in your system may be causing problems.

It can be downloaded from http://www.etrecheck.com

I would uninstall trusteer - this is known to cause problems.

Also, I am not familiar with this Kies application, but it seems to be old, and may be not fully compatible, and it installed 5 kernel extensions (built targetting 10.5 and 10.6...)

One other thing that may or may not be relevant. Having all these drives connected at the same time, even if you are not actively using them, may slow things. The report does say that there is a lot of IO going on.

Unless there's a problem with the file I don't see why it doesn't export, except it's going to be really hard to get a file the size down to email size. Not sure what you're doing with retiming, but that might only make export even harder. It's a large, high resolution file if it's only one minute two seconds. What are you doing to export? You might have more control using Compressor.

Rather than trying to crush it to email size you might consider using a file sharing solution like WeTransfer.

Where are you exporting to? What drive? How is it formatted?
