View all photos in media browser?

I want to access my photos with the file browser that you use to bring files to an application, for example a web browser or an image editor. When I click on the 'Photos' title in the 'Media' section of the browser and select 'Photos' I can see only a fraction of my photo library. How do access all my photos? I'm using Mac OS 10.12.6.

If you have more than one Photos lIbrary, you have to ensure that the correct library is enabled as the System Photo Library. Only one library can be your system photo library. While you are viewing the library you want to use, open the Photos > Preferences > General and check, that the option "Use as System Photo Library" is grayed out, as it should be. If it is not grayed out, click it. Then restart Photos and your web browser.

Are you using iCloud Photos? In that case you should view the photos enlarged to enforce a download from iCloud. The photos have to restored locally to appear in the Media Browser.

Regarding your first suggestion, the library option was greyed out. I'm not using any other local libraries.

I am using iCloud photos. In my iCloud settings Photos is enabled.

If I open an image in Photos by hitting space and then try accessing it again in another application it still doesn't appear in the media browser. All I can see is a collection of older photos. The photos I see here seem to be in a chronological order, but I still can't see my latest photos.

Thank you for your suggestion. Any other ideas?

Here's some more information about my situation:

  • Most photos taken with my iPhone XS don't appear in the browser. Some do, and I can't tell why.
  • All screenshots and imported images seem to show up.
  • Everything is synced to iCloud. I can see all my photos and videos in iCloud.com.
  • Photos desktop app shows a warning on some of my photos saying "The original image was captured in an unsupported image format. To view the full-resolution photo you need to upgrade to the latest version of macOS". However some of these photos are accessible from the media browser, so the issue is probably unrelated.

A stupid workaround is to drag & drop the image from Photos to Finder and navigate to that directory with the browser, but that's pretty inconvenient considering Apple has made a built-in feature to avoid this.

I'd like to identify the root cause to this behavior so I could at least write a bug report to Apple, but I can't think of any way to test what it might be.
