How can I reset a iPod touch that has never been connected to my iTunes account. Force recovery is not working whilst plugged in.

I have followed the force recovery steps whilst the iPod touch is connected but I get no info going to the iPod touch. I get a message on my mac saying 'To allow access please respond on your iPod touch', but I get no message on my device to respond to.

No you're not putting it in force recovery if itunes is asking you to respond.
