How to format SSD internal drive if downgrading from High Sierra to Sierra?

If I am am downgrading from High Sierra to Sierra then should I reformat my SSD internal drive from APFS to Mac OS Extended? or keep it APFS? Many issues since upgrading both my internal hard drive (to a new Samsung SSD) as well as upgrading to High Sierra. Now I want to downgrade so should I keep the SSD formatted with APFS? or also go back to MAC OS Extended in order to work with Sierra? I have a MacbookPro8,2 (Late 2011); 16 GB Ram; new Samsung 860 EVO 1tb drive.

You must reformat the drive to use HFS+ because Sierra cannot be installed on an APFS formatted disk. Why do you wish to downgrade to Sierra? Fortunately, you can accomplish what you want using Network Restore:

Internet/Network Recovery of El Capitan or Later on a Clean Disk

If possible back up your files before proceeding.

  1. Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the (Command-Option-Shift-R) keys until a globe appears.
  2. The Utility Menu will appear in from 5-20 minutes. Be patient.
  3. Select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button.
  4. When Disk Utility loads select the drive (usually, the out-dented entry) from the side list.
  5. Click on the Erase tab in Disk Utility's main window. A panel will drop down.
  6. Set the partition scheme to GUID.
  7. Set the Format type to APFS (SSDs only) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  8. Click on the Apply button, then click on the Done button when it activates.
  9. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  10. Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

This will install the original OS version pre-installed when the computer was new (10.6.6 or .7). From there you can download the Sierra installer and upgrade.
