I want to save old messages onto my iMac hard drive so I can start now only syncing new messages across my three devices(iMac, iPad and iPhone).
I don't need to see those old messages except where they are stored on the hard drive. However, I want to save them in a safe place on the hard drive and backed up on my external hard drive.

Do you have Messages enabled on your Mac currently? If so, then they are already archived under Macintosh HD>Users>your user name>Library>Messages>Archive. You could then copy that to your external HD to keep what is currently archived backed up safely.

Not sure what I would suggest there. All of my folders have dates on them, so if I were copying them, I would just copy what is in the Archive. It kind of depends on how you want to organize them. More of a personal preference call.

Hi Gail, Thank you so much! Yes, this is what the senior advisor recommended I do. I also find that I don't need to back up messages in iCloud to have them seen across my devices as they communicate via wifi at home.
My only issue now is finding the best way to organize them by year. Should I use the date modified as the defining date of each text?
