How Far Back Should I Keep Time Machine Backups (A couple of questions)?

First, my current TM drive is a 2GB drive with backups going back to March 2015. My mid-2011 iMac is currently running MacOS 10.11.6 (El Capitan) but will be updated to MacOS 10.13.6 (High Sierra). Later I'm replacing the iMac with one that will go at least to MacOS 10.14 (Mojave) and hopefully further.

Next question, I'd like to move the current TM back up to a 4GB drive; how can I do that particularly in El Capitan?

How long to keep things is very personal.

I would suggest coming up with a policy for backups.

For example, companies do this, and do something like ...

Make a daily incremental backup at 12:01 am

Weekly on Sunday at 7:01 am make a weekly full backup

and delete daily ones older than 2 months.

Monthly on Sunday at 11:01 pm make a monthly full backup

and delete monthly ones older than 24 months.

Two copies might be stored on drives kept off site in 2 places.

Yearly on Jan 2nd make an annual full backup on permanent media

(e.g. dvd) and keep 2 copies in different places forever.

The older the file the harder to get to and restore.

If a file is real old and kept for a short time is might be lost.

i.e. A file existing for less than a year might be lost after 2 years

and for something that was edited and deleted before the

next monthly backup the final edits might be lost after 2 months.

Obviously a personal policy would not be nearly so complicated but you get the idea.

Maybe -

Every six months make a full backup on dvd and keep forever.

Every 6 months go through the list and keep everything from the last 6 months,

beyond 6 months keep only the 1st ones done each month for the last 2 years,

and delete all older than 2 years (except the 6 month dvds).

It is easy to make a policy.

The real hard part is, like new year's resolutions and diets, sticking with them.

It is easy when every thing is running smoothly to let things lapse.

Then when there is a problem - oops.

Keep backups as far back as you may need. If you no longer need older backups then use the Time Machine app to delete them. If you don't need older backups then you can erase the Time Machine drive and start from scratch.

Use Disk Utility's Restore function to copy the old Time Machine drive to the new one. Be sure the new drive is formatted HFS+, only. Do not use APFS.

BTW, you did not actually ask a first question. 😀

No, you didn't but I was told by the 7-level when I asked about where to post a cross MacOS version question regarding Time Machine, I was told to post in the relevant MacOS areas. In my response to that I told him I was trying to NOT post similar questions in different forums, but since he said I had to do it that way, I would.

I DON'T want to do so if I can avoid it; that is why I also asked if I could move the TM data from a 2 GB drive to a 4 GB drive as the 2 GB is full. Eventually I'll have to move the TM data from the 4 GB drive to a 12 GB or larger drive, of course.

Fortunately Kappy has told me how to do the move; too bad I can't give him both a "Helpful" AND a "Solved"!

The problem is I may not actually KNOW how far back into TM I have to go in order to find a particular file.

I plan on keeping ALL external drives as HFS+

Yes, I did try to ask in only one area, but was told I had to ask in the relevant OS area. Since my question was relevat to El Capitan, High Sierra, and Mojave, I had to ask the question in all three areas, tailored to the specific OS version that area covered.

TECHNICALLY, the first question was the subject! ;-)
