I have activated file vault but it seems to have hung and I cannot find a way out. It has slowed my mac to the speed that you might associate with a ZX81 (if anyone remembers them).

It can be terribly slow, but nothing you can do other than let it finish, or restart & let it finish.
Thanks. I have fixed it by the fairly drastic solution of wiping the hard drive and reinstalling from time machine. This got rid of filevault (and I shall not try it again!)
It's been stuck half way for the last three days.
And I have turned it off a couple of times.
OK, thanks. Is it normal for the machine to be very slow while the data is being encrypted?
Oh yes, quite slow, & if an HDD instead of an SSDn still slow after it's finished.

You have to let it finish encrypting before you can decrypt it. Have you tried restarting the computer?
