Pages should be waiting for you at the Mac App Store, download for free. If you like, you can also have Numbers (somewhat similar, but not identical to excel) and Keynote (somewhat similar, but not identical to PowerPoint) also for free. These Applications can read and write files to corresponding Microsoft formats for word, excel, and PowerPoint.

Word and excel are part of Microsoft office, and are NOT free. If you need to exchange files daily with users of those programs, you may prefer to pay for that package.

Another free alternative is LibreOffice, and there are some others as well that are worth considering.

4. How do I purchase office and put it on my laptop so I can use word? How is it downloadable without a place to put a disc?

Sorry about the long url but it is Microsoft:

You could also purchase a usb external DVD player for your Mac. As long as the discs are Office for Mac.

Great! Well this one doesn't have Office on it.

  1. I need office. I can't read files sent to me
  2. I have discs with office on it that I bought for my IMAC.
  3. This laptop has no place to put a disc, so I obviously can't use those anyway.

Buy and install Office for Mac. Most computers do not come with Office preinstalled.

. I have discs with office on it that I bought for my IMAC.

If it is an older version of Office it won't work with your new operating system

. This laptop has no place to put a disc, so I obviously can't use those anyway.

You could use an external cd drive.
