Boot Camp Error "Your bootable USB drive could not be created"

Hello,

I have Macbook pro 15 inch mid 2012, running Mojave 10.14 i am trying to install windows 10 (April update) from their website using bootcamp but the error "Your bootable USB drive could not be created" "(there is not enough space available on the disk)" pops up after a few minutes of launching the bootcamp.

I am using Kingston data traveler 32Gb usb 3.0 drive.

Things what i tried:

  • Tried both versions of WINDOWS 10 which was on microsoft website, April and October updates.
  • Different format of USB did not work, bootcamp formats again on Fat32.

As i know this error is because Fat32 format does not allow to transfer files more than 4Gb, i tried to put the windows files manually one by one but there is one file which is 4.09Gb and it did not work.

Hope to get help from someone.

I am bit curious how does the lack of USB 3 driver in windows ISO linking to the Boot Camp? I mean Boot Camp is running in Mac OS X side and can do whatever it wants to do, right?

Yes, and it does. It has drivers for a USB2 and USB3 drive. USB2/3 ports are physically the same (unlike USBc). It builds the Windows installer.

Or Boot Camp simply checks the type of USB flash and throws away any flash not in USB 2?

No. It will build an installer on a connected drive.

The reboot to switch to Windows Installer, removes all macOS drivers and macOS from the context. The WinPE must recognize the disk, but it has no drivers for USB3, so it fails with 'No bootable device'.

Also, see http://codeabitwiser.com/2014/03/how-to-install-windows-7-with-only-usb-3-0-ports/ on how IntelXHCI is added to the boot.wim and install.wim files.
