Apple iPhone 4S

I have owned this phone since 2012/3 bought new from Telstra.Yesterday 7/2/2019 suddenly switched from user friendly to nothing. Asks for apple sign in details to reactivate,details which I'm not able to give because I don't recall ever using any.Screen is saying Find my Phone was attempted by a previous Owner and I should contact That Person,Well " duh" I am the only owner ,

Question is "what to do ,Mr Apple?

An expensive brick? Let me preface this by saying I'm not an iPhone user myself. I'm posting this on behalf of my son who is struggling with his iPhone XR, and Apple can't (won't?) help. A few weeks back, it would appear that his iCloud account has been compromised (strangely, not long after a messy break-up). His Apple account password has been changed, and the only recovery method is a phone number that's unknown to him. His iPhone still works, but naturally no iCloud services work, and he can't create a new AppleID without signing out of the current one. He bought the phone brand new from JB HiFi (and I'm sure we can get proof of ownership), but apple simply fobbed him off and said "contact law enforcement". I appreciate that security exists for a reason, but there must be a way we can prove ownership and have the device reset so we can use a different account. Can someone offer any advice, please?

I can't log in to my phone! Unfortuately, my phone has been locked by the old-owner and it requires me to contact them. BUT i don't even know who are they??? This phone is really important to me please help!! Does Apple system too severe about privacy? With a low-tech person i hope someone reply me asap. MUCH OBLIGED!!

Its your AppleID and password. You must have logged into itunes or App Store recently??
