Copy/Paste images from facebook to facebook messenger on chrome

The issue here is, on most devices and operating systems you can use chrome to log onto facebook, spot a meme or whatever, right click, select copy image (as opposed to copy image link) and then paste that onto a facebook messenger conversation and it will copy the actual image, not the link. A small preview is shown and when you hit enter, voila, it sends the pic. This is broken for me on one of my macbook pros, it sends the link even when I select copy image. I know this is a mac problem, and not a chrome problem (more on this below) and here's why:

1. I have two macbook pros with nearly identical specs; Both running mojave, both running chrome.
2. Both macbook pros are using the same gmail/google profile on chrome and are "sync'd" meaning bookmarks, extensions, settings, etc are shared on both.
3. One major difference exists between them: one was bought in Mexico and the other one in the US. The physical keyboard layout is different. More notably, the mexican one has an ñ and stuff.
4. The US-bought macbook pro with the US physical layout works fine, it copy/pastes images without issues as expected. The mexican one does not (mind you, this is my personal one, the other is the "work" one).
5. After fiddling with the keyboard settings -> input sources a whole lot, I managed to get it to work a whopping 3 times. Then it stopped working. Switching between the US layout and the Spain layout will randomly make it work on occasions. I switched like 50 times to get it to work thrice.
6. If you click an image, right click and select "open in new tab" then copy that image, the rest of the flow will work as desired (with it pasting the actual image and not the link).

So again, I believe this is somehow linked to the keyboard input sources but am not sure. I need/want it to work for the sake of sanity (it should "just work" right?). Help is appreciated!
