photos that are in PHOTOS on my MAC
I have thousands of photos in my IMPORTED file, I want to keep them in PHOTOS but delete them
from my imported file. Is that possible?

Are you referring to the Imports view in the sidebar of your Photos library?
If yes then the answer is NO. Imports is just another view of the photos in the library sorted by the date they were imported. They do not take up extra space on your hard drive as they are only pointers to the original image in the Photos view.
