call forwarding to European number

I am getting an international SIM for my iPhone 6 which will have both a European phone number and a US number on it. If I enable call forwarding on my phone to forward to the US number on the SIM, will that work even while my phone is in Europe to forward calls from the US? For some people, I will just give them the "new" US number, but I don't want to miss any other important calls.

If you forward the international number to your US number the international carrier will forward the call to your US number, and you will pay the international rate for that call. You will then pay the international rate from the US to your phone, just as you would for any call to your US number. Call forwarding is done by the phone company, not by your phone.

But I suspect I still don't completely understand what you want to do. Do you want callers to use your international number when you are not in the US? Do you want those to forward to your US number also?

Perhaps my question wasn't clear. The international SIM includes its own US number, so people calling me from the US simply call that number as a domestic call and my phone rings regardless of where I am in the world, but the caller isn't paying international rates. So, if I forward my current mobile number to the US number on the SIM, would that forwarding process occur here in the US before it gets routed to my phone or does the call have to go to the phone first to then be forward to the SIM US number? Does that make more sense?

I think the title I put on the thread is what's confusing the conversation. I'm not trying to forward anything to the international number. I don't want to miss any important calls on my US mobile number while I'm in Europe, so those I would forward to the US number on the SIM and I'd receive those calls as normal, except without the caller paying international dialing rates.

I think you answered the question anyway when you said that the call forwarding is done by the phone carrier. Even though I set up call forwarding on my phone to forward calls back to the same phone only on a different number, the forwarding will take place somewhere on a US network before it ever reaches my phone. Calls wouldn't go to my phone on one number (the one being forwarding) and sent out to be forwarded back to my phone on the SIM US number.
