Hey, I wanted to know why I do not get alerts when there's a new update? I only know from online publications ...
Can these alerts be enabled? It does not make sense that I miss important updates.

You do get updates notifications, but it is on a sliding schedule; Apple does not notify 1.2 billion people of an update at the same time, because it would overwhelm their servers if everyone updated at the same time. So if you connect your phone to iTunes it checks for updates about once a week. Your phone usually notifies you within 3 or 4 days with a "badge" on the Settings app.
You can always go to Settings/General/Software Update and see if there is an update. You can also turn on Automatic Updates while there if you wish.

Yes, you don't have to connect to iTunes to get a notification on the phone. The phone will actually download the update if it is connected to Wifi, power and locked. So when you see the badge it is usually already on your phone and just needs to be installed.
Note, however, that to be safe you should always create a backup in either iTunes or iCloud (or both) before updating.
So even if I do not connect the iPhone to iTunes it will notify me after a few days by a red tag in the settings?
It makes sense that Apple will not instruct all its customers to update at the same time.
