iPhoto and photo resolution

Why are photos stored as unadjustednonraw_thumb when they have been edited in iPhoto? and what does this mean. I am concerned that I have a 24 MP camera set to the finest setting and largest file size yet from iPhoto they are not a good enough resolution to print bigger than 7x5. They should be so wondering if this is an issue with iPhoto?

Are you asking about iPhoto or Photos for Mac? I have seen the files named "unadjustednonraw_thumb" only in my Photos Library, not in any iPhoto Library.

The "unadjustednonraw_thumb" image files are working copies created to be able to browse the library quickly. They are used as thumbnails for the edited versions in the browser. Photos is saving all original image files at the full resolution. All exported edited versions will be rendered from the original image files, when you export an edited version from Photos with "File > Export". When you are exporting the photo you can specify the resolution and the quality.

After you edit a photo in Photos 2.0 and want to use it in another application a high resolution, select the photo in Photos and go to the "File" menu. Use "File > Export > export ... photos" to save a copy in a very good quality on your desktop.

  • In the export dialog select the format of the photos - JPEG or TIFF.
  • Click the triangle to the right of "Photo Kind" to reveal the controls for the quality.
  • Select a high quality and the Original Size, if you need a high resolution version for printing.

"UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb" has been driving me crazy for a few months. A few minutes ago I used my iPhone SE to take a photo of a document. On the iPhone camera I chose HDR and then hit ON. I took the photo and plugged my iPhone into my laptop. In Photos 4.0 I clicked on Devices-->My Iphone and imported the image to Photos (2 photos imported as expected). In photos I dragged the HDR version of the image into Photoshop Elements 2018 (16.0). When I went to edit the image I noticed that it was an UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb. What the H--- is going on? I have lost so many hours trying to solve this problem. I never had this problem before a few months ago, and I've had the phone for 2 or 3 years. I've dragged the image into Elements the same way for a few years before this problem started.
