iOS 12.1.4 battery drain

Am I the only one with this issue? Yesterday, or the day before that, I updated my iPhone XR. One thing I've come to notice is that, since I updated it, the battery drains pretty fast. I'd say I'm an average user and I could go the entire day and it wouldn't reach 20%. Now, around 4PM, after being fully charged around 5AM, it's down to 50%. I just find it weird, knowing that I'm an average user, my average screentime is around 2 hours a day, so I don't know what's up.

It doesn’t work because some built-in apps also cause the battery drain issue. Safari is one of them and it can’t be uninstalled like some previous “smart” comments suggested.

The only way around it is to work with Google Translate as last app used. It does work for me but only for when the phone is closed. When I actively use it the battery still drains pretty fast.

For me the final conclusion is the battery not only drains while the phone is off, but it also drains faster than usual while is being used. And since it’s a phone, it has to be used exactly as every user prefers, although it might be contrary to some comments above...

Hi robert1326,

I just spent most of my day today doing the same, including biting the bullet to update the iOS on my spare device. After switching devices altogether and testing all of the above, I still had the same battery draining issue.

After factory reset on my backup device and prior to signing in to iCloud or restoring I messed around on the phone a bunch and downloaded podcasts, etc (doing anything in podcasts will guarantee triggering battery drain for me). Without iCloud signed in, I had no issue and everything was fine. Once I signed in to my iCloud, the issue resumed again, specifically when doing things in the podcasts app. I ran this process though a few times - signing in/signing out and power cycling my device, and was consistently able to recreate the behavior.

After restoring my backup I tried toggling off anything to do with iCloud Photos again - no change. I then turned off every option within the iCloud menu and still had the same battery drain. I'm now thinking it's tied to iCloud or podcasts because of the fact that this was happening after factory reset, no apps installed.

Not really sure what else I could possibly try from here...

hey andrei, a_c_a, all

thank you for your replays!

"hope the best ...expect the worst"

as nothing reported by the battery usage, I also suspected an in house app, somehow hidden.

iCloud sync could be one of them.

I have lots of photos, and "Optimise iPhone Storage" - on.

I was suspecting the sync of photos, etc. indexing, face recognition, but come on...every single night 50% battery?

at this point I think we've tried everything ... I just hope will be solved.

thank you,

robert

There is a battery depletion issue with iOS 12.1.4, but it is not universal. I have an iPad Air II that has iOS 12.1.4 installed. I can leave it untouched on my desk for a week and the battery level only drops to 75%. It has hundreds of third-party apps installed and iCloud enabled. Yet on my iPhone 6S, with maybe a few dozen third-party apps installed and iCloud enabled, the battery level will drop to zero in a day even if I do not use it. In trying to diagnose the problem, I have restored the phone as new and installed no third-party apps. The battery still drains in a day. The only way I have found to preserve the battery is to turn on Low Battery Mode. Then, with it untouched on my desk, it will still have 95% charge at the end of the day.

I suggest that those experiencing this problem report it to Apple.

Sad to report that after a week of relative normalcy the drain is BACK - and with a vengeance! As in, imagine the proverbial cliff - that's what my battery level looked like over lunch today, dropping 30% over 40 minutes while watching some videos / browsing the web. It slowed down once I switched to activities that did not involve network usage (podcast / ibooks).

So - what changed? Not sure: 4 apps updated last night (whatsapp, ticketmaster, linkedin, a Japanese dictionary app), I also activated Microsoft messenger (which I had never used before) and turned on "find my iphone" (which I had turned off for the restore session 1.5 weeks ago). By now I have kicked out linkedin and the dictionary app and turned find my iphone off again, but to no avail - in the time of writing these few lines (on another device) it has dropped 2% again, you can basically watch it :-(.

Hm, will delete messenger next and perhaps also ticketmaster, but I don't have high hopes ... sorry guys, but in fairness I thought I should share that the apparent fix I reported a week ago was temporary only.

Hi All,

I finally set up an appointment to see someone at the Genius Bar, not because I thought they could fix the issue but more so I could have them validate with their own eyes the issue that was legitimate.

After walking them through ALL of the troubleshooting I did on my own, they suggested to replace my battery as a last ditch effort. We replaced the battery and confirmed again that it did not resolve the issue. The folks at the store definitely were empathetic, but advised that at that point that I would need to get on the phone with iCloud support for further troubleshooting.

As a last-minute idea, one of the people helping me suggested that I try one last thing - do a factory reset through iTunes rather than through the phone settings. The reason for this is that a factory reset through the phone settings will only remove the data from your phone but does not replace the OS, while resetting through iTunes does replace the OS. He recommended that I set up my device as new after doing that and only sign into iCloud - do not restore my backup for about 24 hours to confirm that the issue is fully resolved. I immediately ran through a backup and factory reset through iTunes as soon as I got home, and so far it seems to have worked! I've been hammering my phone pretty hard since I did this and the battery drain seems to be normal. I just restored from my backup as well, and so far everything seems to be fine.

Hopefully this was the issue - just needing to re-download the iOS - and we can all be over with this ridiculously annoying problem. I will report back if the battery starts draining again, but otherwise I hope to be happily using my phone as normal.

I and others have advocated that fix for page after page in this thread.

hi all,

I’m visiting Vienna...and guess what?!?!?!?...the card reader is not working anymore!!!!!

worked without problems before, I always was able to transfer card photos/videos (taken with gopro).

and when I did a search, guess what, it is reported by many!

now it is not working at all...

so...I usually do have a flexible and positive attitude...but right now I must say 12.1.4 is a total failure.

and this iTunes reset...I made it several times....even to 12.1.3....as Apple signed this version..

so this is not the real solution.

but right now when the card reader is not working anymore, and affects me deeply as I’m traveling and have to download photos and videos every evening, I have to say Apple made something very low quality with the latest update....

sorry guys....I’m very very sad...

robert
