When I move an email message to the trash it disappears from there in about 24 hours and I can't find it again, how can I stop the trash messages from disappearing please?

Open Mail, click on Preferences from Mail in the menubar, click on Accounts. For each account you have select Mailbox Behaviours, now look at the Trash section and select from the drop down how long you want deleted items stay in the Trash.
