Same RAM chip size per slot?

Hi,

I have a late 2012 27 Inch imac which comes with 4 RAM slots, currently with 2 x 4GB RAM, totalling 8GB. For the remaining 2 slots, can I install 2 x 8GB RAMs or does each RAM have to match the size in the other slots? i.e. can I have 2 x 4GB and 2 x 8GB totalling 24 GB or or can I only have 4 x 4GB or 4 x 8GB?

Thanks.

The ram does not have to be matching sizes, just install the new memory in the empty slots. I am currently running mu late 2015 iMac with 2x4 and 2x8 with no issues. Just be sure to use quality ram, bargain basement brands will cause kernel panics.
