Textedit won't open or quit.

For no apparent reason Textedit stopped working. It won't open and says: "The application “TextEdit.app” is not open anymore." Force quit has no effect on it. I tried taking out the presence plist but that had no effect.

I duplicated Textedit and the copy seems to work fine, but I can't replace the original with the copy. Is there any way to reinstall it?

Mac OS 10.14.2, Mojave, Textedit 1.14

Mac mini, 10.14

If a reboot as suggested above does not right the ship,

There is no stand alone TextEdit.app independent of the macOS.

You can To trouble shoot further :

Try a SafeBoot  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches, dynamic loader cache, etc. get cleared and rebuilt.

This test will tell you if third party interference; extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

Test issue in another user (or guest user) account  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204443

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

— reinstalling the MacOS on top of your existing macOS will refresh leaving your user data in place.
