Have iPhone on plan through Apple, can I switch carriers?

I am unsure of who to contact regarding this issue. I have an iPhone X that I bought through Apple and pay every month. When I purchased it, I had to use my Verizon account to set it up. Since I bought it at Apple and the loan is CitizensOne, am I free to switch carriers? If not, what are my options? Thanks!
