"Save as" autofill not working

Hello,

When saving a new file in any application, I am not able to use an existing files title to autofill the "save as" dialogue box. Is this feature some how turned off?

In Pages for an example, with a new document.... I click File > Save. The save window opens. If I already have a file named "combined_reciepts_dec_01.pdf" and now have this new file I want to save as "combined_reciepts_dec_02.pdf" I am not able to click on "combined_reciepts_dec_01.pdf" as a starting point. I instead have to type the entire new file name in the save as dialogue box.

I save a lot of files with reoccurring titles, where only one or two characters are different or in some cases want to overwrite an existing file using the same title. I used to be able to click an existing files title and that title would appear in the save as dialogue box. Currently, if I click an existing file, nothing happens in the save as dialogue box.

Any assistance would be helpful! Thank you

Just thinking, might try this...

First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup).

Then move these files to the Desktop...

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist

Reboot & test.

Thanks for your suggestion, however the question is not about how to save, or how to duplicate a file... I am able to save and name files without issue. The problem is, I used to be able to click on any existing files title to autofill the "save as" dialogue box. Then I could overwrite or rename my new save from there. Currently if I click on an existing file, the save as dialogue box remains empty or as "untitled". Furthermore, it is not an issue with Pages alone. Any application that opens and saves any kind of file has this same limitation.

In the image example below; I used to be able to click on "Artist Bio", "Artist Statement", "Artist Resume", etc. Then that name would appear in the "Save as" box and I could edit it from there before saving. Currently, clicking any of those does nothing, and the save as box remains unchanged.

It is most problematic when I have a long file title, and I wish to save another file with the same title, but change a character or two. I have to re-type the whole thing, instead of just clicking an existing file.

Thanks again for your suggestion.
