I just looked and the VIP mailbox is greyed out in Mail. It's actually gone from the panel of mailboxes on the left side of the window and the the VIP tab w/ down-arrow is greyed out. I've never seen this before. Any suggestions? Mojave OS

I did close Mail and relaunch it to no avail. However, I found that clicking on the VIP star in one VIP email brought the VIP mailbox back. The weird thing is that I've been using Mail since the (dot)Mac days and this never happened before. And I have no idea what I did to cause this disappearance of the VIP mailbox. If you know please tell me so I can avoid it in the future. On another note, I think I have rebuilt mailboxes maybe once in 10+ years. What does it do and how often should it be done. Thanks

Thanks coming to Apple Support Communities for help today. As I am understanding, your macOS Mail is no longer showing the VIP mailbox.
Since this started, have you closed Mail and tried relaunching it?
If that doesn't work, check to see if your VIP contacts are still marked as VIP Show emails from VIP senders in Mail on Mac. Try removing and then re-adding VIP status for one of your contacts.
