Is there a way to change the default photo file type to JPG or PNG on iPad/iPhone

Looking for my iPad to take pictures from the camera as a JPG or PNG file by default, can this be changed?

I believe they normally save as a JPEG file type but trying to get it to work with software that only supports JPG/PNG

iPad mini, 10

The filename extensions JPEG and JPG are both used for the JPEG file type. They mean the same. It is just on Windows systems, that the system can only read three letter file name extensions.

Is your iPad running iOS 11 or newer?

Then check the Settings > Camera. If this is set to "High Efficiency" change it to "Most Compatible". Then the images taken by the camera will behaved as JPEG instead of HEIC. On a computer you can simply replace the filename extension "JPEG" by "JPG", if you need a three-letter extension.
