Drag and drop from Photos does not work everywhere

Why doesn't Apple add universal drag and drop from Photos? This is basic functionality and having to re-save a photo somewhere else (desktop) just to add the convenience of drag and drop is ridiculous. Which is what I just had to do to get a photo into gmail. Design for overall convenience and not to keep users locked into your software suite, which doesn't work.
