Virus alert

I received a message on my Mac saying it is apple support telling me of viruses and the need to download a program to remove. Is this a scam?

Yes. Unless you've just uploaded a file(or are running Windows and manually started a scanner), there's no way for a website to tell that there's malware on your computer.
