Is this a scam? Security/virus warning

my desktop has a message saying it’s from Apple security—”MAC OS X is infected with Viruses and other malicious application. Viruses must be removed and system damage repaired. It is necessary to run the Virus removal procedure immediately, please proceed. If you leave this site your MAC OS X will remain damaged and vulnerable. 1-888-413-3983”User uploaded file

Yes. There isn't a way for a website to tell that there's malware on a computer unless you just uploaded a file, or are running Windows and manually started a scanner.
