Standard application back in dock after I restart my computer

Hey,

After updating to Mac OS Mojave three standard applications appeared in my dock: Siri, Maps and Photos. I can remove them from the dock, but after restarting my computer they appear again. I have tried removing both with secondary click and drag and drop. Any suggestions what I might try?

Perhaps your Dock's preferences have become corrupted. What I would do is restore the Dock to its default preferences, then remove the items from it that you don't want there, then add the items that you do want there, and finally, restart your computer. In fact, rather than just restart it, I would say to shut down completely, and then reboot it from a cold state.

You may be able to restore the Dock to its default state by using the following command in the Terminal:

defaults delete com.apple.dock; killall Dock

After you type the above, hit your "return' key.

If this has been helpful, or if it even resolves your problem, please let me know. Thanks!

Well that is definitely an interesting clue. So the "killall" command is working, yet there they are again once your reboot your machine. To me, that strongly suggests that there is some default settings file -- a.k.a. ".plist" file -- somewhere which is causing them to be forced back into the Dock against your will. That definitely should not be happening.

At this point, the only thing I can suggest is that you do something a little risky by looking in ~/Library/Preferences/ and deleting any prefs files which appear to be related to those three apps, keeping in mind that if you have any special settings for any of them, they will be lost.

After you move the "plist" files to the Trash -- or at least to your Desktop, in case you need to replace them later -- shut down your Mac completely, wait about 15 seconds, and then reboot it, and hope for the best.
