Is this a curl or openSSL error?

Hi.

Recently my laptop died. So I had to move to another very old laptop for the time being. Whenever I try to update ruby using ruby-install, I get the following error:

curl: (35) error:1407742E:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:tlsv1 alert protocol version

I am guessing openSSL is out of date or something. My MacOS is Lion (10.7.5) and thats the max it can go. I have no other option for at least a month or two. So, I need to know how to make it functional again for development aka programming.

Thank you.

You should abandon attempts to install a current (v2.6.1) Ruby on Lion, as the contemporary requirements to install its dependencies, and compile the Ruby distribution (and gems) are missing on that old OS X implementation. Either move your calendar up to more current hardware/operating system support, or borrow something comparable for gap planning.

Everyone has left OS X Lion behind: Package managers, virtual machine vendors, Ruby version managers (e.g. RVM, RBENV), and dependent libraries, and Apple compilation tools and libraries. You can get the gzipped tarball from the ruby-lang.org download site via web browser, but then you are effectively done.
